Friday 13th of May I went to #ImStillStanding Bristol with Residence Arts Collective as part of MayFest. The Conversations and talks by artists were concerned with how to survive as artist. Top tips included:
1. Hold Your Nerve - Andy Smith 2. Remember everyone is winging and doesn't know what they're doing - Low Profile 3. Always trust that something of value will emerge, don't suffer fools and don't smoke - Sue Maclane 4. Do something you believe in, it's all you've got - Tim Etchells 5. Become aware of what you need now - Julie Vulcan 6. "...two years staring into a hedge, how lucky am I?" be thankful - Sheila Ghelani 7. Give up giving up, get angry when things go wrong then move on, have kids - Search Party 8. We need a sharing based economy, forget whether others think work is good or not - Sue Palmer It was great to be 'part of the conversation' a community of artists. Great thanks to everyone who contributed and Residence for putting on the event. A real pleasure to have Lincoln Shaw round to our house this Saturday afternoon. We talked about our upcoming performance of Felled and how we were inspired by his article in the Totnes Times that told the story of Luccombe. A man who joined two types of tree together to make a new oak. He was so proud of it that he chopped down the original and turned it into planks to use for his coffin.
